Thinking about going alone? Why I love being a freelance PR consultant
It’s been a summer of flexibility, freedom and freelancing and although I’m about to trade my sunhat in for a beanie hat my working week remains the same. I like to travel a lot and being on the road makes it impossible for me to pursue the daily 9-5: which I am not missing, especially when I see my Twitter feed in the morning, full of angry commuters stuck on the tube, whilst I’ve got a coffee in hand after a stress-free start to the day.
So, with a passion for travel and a desire to create a work life balance, I decided to dip my toe not only into the Adriatic Sea but also into the freelance world to test my talents and interests and eventually see how I could balance working whilst travelling for a period of time.
It has so far been a hugely rewarding and eye-opening experience. Here are my favourite things that I love about working for You Do Better as a freelance PR consultant:
Work/life balance
This is a major reason for many when they take the plunge into life as a freelancer and it certainly was for me. In today’s world, if you are a full time working employee, you have to be right on schedule and plan your day accordingly. I like to travel and fit work/projects around my day. This means that I don’t have to gaze at my screen for 8 hours a day and be stuck in the continual rat race. I know the work I have for the week, so I can factor this into my schedule. For this I feel really lucky, both in terms of my quality of living, but also that it hasn’t impacted my PR work one little bit.
Location is irrelevant
Working as a PR freelancer means that most of my clients are comfortable using Skype, social media, file sharing systems and a whole variety of other remote-working tools. Of course, you can’t beat a face-to-face meeting, but with the digital world being the way it is today, there is no need to take an 8 hour round trip for a 1-hour meeting. It has never been easier to work remotely.
Highly motivated
The amount of motivation is really high when you’re your own boss and you manage your own workload. You have first-hand experience of how you’re impacting a client and that’s extremely rewarding. There is a quote that I always go by which says, “Do something that makes you jump out of bed.”
Working alongside Ruby at You Do Better has been the most liberating experience of my career. Her approach and attitude towards work is like nothing I’ve experienced before. She very much walks the walk and definitely doesn’t just talk to talk, which is rare in today’s world! I love how I’m given the freedom to be my own boss and I certainly wouldn’t think twice about recommending You Do Better to any freelancers that are thinking of taking the plunge.
If you’re thinking about freelancing because you’re good enough and you want the lifestyle it brings, go for it! What have you got to lose? You can always get a 9-5 job if things don’t work out or do it as a side hustle to increase your monthly wage. For more about joining the team, go to our Associates page.
