Auto-antonym | Ray Gillespie

This week’s word has been chosen by Ray Gillespie, Director at Worcester Web Studio: Auto-antonym.

I love thinking of words that are auto-antonyms. Some of my favourites:

“Dust” can mean to add dust (e.g. to dust a cake) or remove dust (e.g. cleaning a house)
“Sanction” can mean to allow within a set of rules or to punish for breaking the rules
“Shelled” can be something with a shell, or something that’s had its shell removed
“Screen” can mean to show (e.g. a movie) or to hide from view

Feel free to join in with our ‘word of the week’ initiative, which aims to add a little interesting content and some context to the words we use to write it, by emailing: ruby@webdevserver.uk or go to our home page to find out more about what we do.
